Custom Martial Arts Uniforms: A Guide for Schools, Clubs and Brands

Short answer: custom martial arts uniforms are gis, doboks and training suits made to a school’s or brand’s own colours, fabric weight, cut and logos. Each discipline has its own construction: BJJ gis use pearl or gold weave with reinforced collars, judo gis use heavy single or double weave, karate gis range from light kumite cuts to heavy kata cuts, and taekwondo doboks use lighter polyester-cotton with a V-neck. Ordering factory-direct lets a school match the uniform to its discipline, competition rules and budget.

This guide explains how uniforms differ by martial art, which fabrics and rules to know, and how schools, clubs and brands can order custom uniforms.

BJJ Gis

BJJ gis must survive constant gripping, so collars and seams are reinforced. Competition gis follow the IBJJF gi rules on colour, collar thickness and sleeve length. Learn more about fabrics in our BJJ gi fabric guide and see our OEM BJJ gi manufacturing programme.

Judo Gis

Judogi are heavier than most other uniforms because opponents grip and throw by the jacket. Competition judogi must meet federation rules on fabric and fit, so schools with competitors should specify a competition-standard cut. See our custom judo gi manufacturing guide and custom judo gi page.

Karate Gis

Karate uniforms split into two families:

  • Kumite (sparring) gis — lighter fabric for speed and comfort
  • Kata gis — heavier fabric that holds its shape and “snaps” on fast techniques

Many schools order a lighter gi for beginners and a heavier gi for advanced students. Read our karate uniforms and taekwondo doboks guide.

Taekwondo Doboks

Doboks are light and flexible for high kicks. Most use a V-neck wrap-over jacket, and schools often use collar colour to show rank (for example, black collars for black belts). Federation styles differ, so tell your manufacturer which style you follow. See our custom taekwondo uniforms.

Hapkido, Aikido, Kung Fu and Sambo Uniforms

These disciplines use style-specific cuts — from the hakama worn in aikido to the kurtka jacket in sambo. See our custom hapkido uniforms and aikido, kung fu and sambo uniform pages.

  • Order a full size run including kids’ sizes for youth programmes
  • Allow for shrinkage on cotton uniforms, or choose pre-shrunk fabric
  • Collect sizes from students before ordering to avoid unsold stock

Frequently Asked Questions — Custom Martial Arts Uniforms

Q: What is the difference between a judo gi and a BJJ gi?
A: Both are heavy, grip-resistant cotton uniforms. A judogi usually has a longer jacket and looser fit for throws, while a BJJ gi is cut closer to the body with shorter sleeves and reinforced pants for ground work.

Q: Can I use a karate gi for BJJ?
A: It is not recommended. Karate gis are lighter and not reinforced for constant gripping, so they tear quickly in BJJ.

Q: Can a school order uniforms in its own colours?
A: Yes, for training. Competition rules in some disciplines limit colours, so keep at least one competition-legal colour if your students compete.

Q: Can you embroider our school logo on uniforms?
A: Yes. Logos can be embroidered on the back, chest, sleeves or pants, or added as sewn patches.

Q: Do you make kids’ martial arts uniforms?
A: Yes. We make kids’ sizes for BJJ, judo, karate, taekwondo and other disciplines.

Q: Can one order include different types of uniforms?
A: Yes. Multi-discipline schools can order gis, doboks and other uniforms together with matching branding.
