BJJ Gi Sizing Chart — Complete Guide for Adults, Women, and Kids
Finding the right BJJ gi size is one of the most common questions practitioners, academy owners, and brand buyers ask before placing an order. Get it wrong and the gi either fails IBJJF inspection, feels restrictive during training, or has to be returned — all of which cost time and money.
This is the most comprehensive BJJ gi sizing chart available from a manufacturer. Use it to find your correct size, plan your academy order size breakdown, or specify the correct sizes when placing a custom bulk order with Onrox International.
How BJJ Gi Sizing Works
BJJ gis use a lettered size system starting with A (Adult) for men, F (Female) for women, and M (Minor) for children. Unlike standard clothing sizes, BJJ gi sizes are based primarily on height, with weight as a secondary factor.
Why height is the primary factor: IBJJF rules specify that gi sleeves must reach within 5cm of the wrist and gi pants must reach within 5cm of the ankle. A gi sized primarily by weight without considering height will fail these proportional requirements.
Why weight matters too: A tall, slim practitioner and a tall, stocky practitioner are the same height but need different fits. Weight helps determine if you need a standard or a slightly larger size within the same height bracket.

Women’s BJJ Gi Size Chart
| Size | Height | Weight | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | 152–158 cm (5’0″–5’2″) | 50–58 kg (110–128 lbs) | Petite woman |
| F2 | 158–163 cm (5’2″–5’4″) | 58–65 kg (128–143 lbs) | Small-medium woman |
| F3 | 163–168 cm (5’4″–5’6″) | 65–72 kg (143–159 lbs) | Medium woman |
| F4 | 168–173 cm (5’6″–5’8″) | 72–80 kg (159–176 lbs) | Medium-large woman |
| F5 | 173–178 cm (5’8″–5’10”) | 80–90 kg (176–198 lbs) | Large woman |
Women’s gi note: Women’s gis are cut with a tapered waist and shorter jacket body compared to men’s gis of the same sleeve length. A woman wearing a men’s gi in her equivalent size will find it too wide in the waist and too long in the body. Always order from a women’s-specific size chart when possible.
Kids and Youth BJJ Gi Size Chart
| Size | Height | Weight | Approx. Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| M0 | 100–110 cm (3’3″–3’7″) | 18–24 kg | 4–5 years |
| M1 | 110–120 cm (3’7″–3’11”) | 24–30 kg | 5–7 years |
| M2 | 120–130 cm (3’11″–4’3″) | 30–38 kg | 7–9 years |
| M3 | 130–140 cm (4’3″–4’7″) | 38–45 kg | 9–11 years |
| M4 | 140–150 cm (4’7″–4’11”) | 45–55 kg | 11–13 years |
Kids gi note: Children grow quickly. For academy gi programs, order slightly large rather than fitted — a gi that is 3–5cm too long will still pass IBJJF youth inspection and will last an additional 6 months before the child outgrows it.
Teens (13–16 years): Most teenagers fit into adult sizing. Start with A0 for slim teens under 163cm, A1 for average teens, and A2 for larger teens. Girls in this age group should try F1 or F2 from the women’s range.
How to Measure for a BJJ Gi
If you are between sizes or ordering for a new practitioner, take these measurements:
Height: Stand barefoot against a wall. Measure from floor to top of head.
Weight: Use a scale. Wear minimal clothing.
Wingspan (for sleeve length): Stand with arms out to the sides. Measure fingertip to fingertip across the back. A wider wingspan relative to height may indicate you need an L (long) variant.
Chest circumference: Measure around the widest part of the chest with arms relaxed at sides.
Waist circumference: Measure around the natural waist.
Size Breakdown for Academy Bulk Orders
If you are an academy owner ordering custom gis for your student body, use this size distribution as a starting guide:
Adult class size breakdown (100 students):
| Size | Percentage | Quantity (per 100) |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 12% | 12 |
| A2 | 38% | 38 |
| A3 | 28% | 28 |
| A4 | 14% | 14 |
| A5/A6 | 8% | 8 |
Kids class size breakdown (50 students):
| Size | Percentage | Quantity (per 50) |
|---|---|---|
| M0 | 8% | 4 |
| M1 | 20% | 10 |
| M2 | 30% | 15 |
| M3 | 28% | 14 |
| M4 | 14% | 7 |
Note: These are averages based on our experience with academy orders worldwide. Adjust based on your specific student demographics. BJJ academies in the USA and Australia typically skew larger (more A3/A4). Academies in Asia and South America typically skew smaller (more A1/A2).
Gi Sizing and IBJJF Compliance
IBJJF inspection checks these measurements:
- Sleeve must end no more than 5cm above the wrist
- Pants must end no more than 5cm above the ankle
- Jacket lapels must be at least 4cm wide
Pre-shrunk sizing: All gis we manufacture are pre-shrunk. The measurements above reflect post-wash sizing. Wash your gi in cold water on first use and hang dry — this confirms the final fit before competition.
IBJJF tip for border sizes: If you are between sizes, order the larger. A sleeve that is 3cm above the wrist will pass. A sleeve that is 6cm above the wrist will fail.

Frequently Asked Questions — BJJ Gi Sizing
What size BJJ gi should I order for a 5’9″ 80kg man? A2 is the standard recommendation for 5’9″ (175cm) at 80kg. If you have a longer than average arm span, consider A2L if available.
What is the most commonly ordered BJJ gi size? A2 is the most ordered adult size globally. For academy bulk orders, A2 typically represents 35–40% of the total order.
Can I get a BJJ gi in a custom size not on the chart? Yes. We manufacture custom measurement gis for practitioners with proportions that fall outside standard sizing. Contact us with your exact measurements.
Do women need a women’s cut gi or can they wear men’s sizing? Women can wear men’s gis but will find them wider in the waist and longer in the body. A women’s cut gi is significantly more comfortable and provides a better fit for most female practitioners.
How much do BJJ gis shrink after washing? Our gis are pre-shrunk so shrinkage after delivery is minimal — typically 1–2% at most. Wash in cold water and hang dry to maintain your correct sizing.
What size gi should I order for a 10-year-old? A 10-year-old of average height (135–140cm) fits M3. Measure your child’s height and cross-reference with the kids chart above for the most accurate recommendation.
