What GSM Means and Why It Matters
GSM stands for grams per square metre — a measure of fabric weight and density. In BJJ gi manufacturing, GSM determines weight of the finished gi, durability, feel and stiffness, shrinkage behavior, and cost. Always ask for the specific GSM when getting a quote.
Pearl Weave: The Competition Standard
Pearl weave is the dominant fabric in modern BJJ gis. Its distinctive bumpy texture comes from the weave pattern, which creates structural rigidity while maintaining flexibility.
350 GSM — Lightweight/Competition: Preferred by competitors in hot climates or needing to make weight. Less durable than heavier options.
450 GSM — Standard Training: The most popular GSM. Balances weight, durability, and comfort. Most academy and brand gis are produced at this weight.
550 GSM — Heavyweight: Maximum durability. Preferred in cold climates or by academies needing uniforms for daily heavy use.

Ripstop: Lightweight and Tear-Resistant
Ripstop is woven with a reinforcing thread in a crosshatch pattern at regular intervals. The reinforcing grid stops tears from spreading. Most commonly used for gi pants paired with a pearl weave jacket.
Best for: Hot climate academies, lightweight competition gis, athletes who train both gi and no-gi, budget-conscious brands where durability of pants is critical.
Gold Weave: Maximum Durability
Gold weave uses a tighter interlocking weave than pearl weave, resulting in a denser, heavier fabric. Trade-off: gold weave gis are heavier and stiffer, particularly when new.
